After the popularity of our KS2 U.K. Book Map which we released in the summer, we had quite a few requests to create a 'KS2 World Book Map' to help display and promote some of the wonderful books aimed at 7-11 year old children set in countries around the globe. It was a challenge we couldn't refuse!
With help from the teachers, authors and librarians on Twitter, books were suggested and a list was established. Some wonderful websites and blogs were also passed my way and they are certainly worth exploring if you have the time.
I was particularly interested in a blog by @WorldKidLit which suggested a wonderful range of older books as well as recently translated novels. I was also directed to the ELS Inspire Library digital catalogue and a range of other sites which focused on specific countries.
I hope what we've created is a useful starting point of books from around the world by a mixture of both English speaking and native authors. I've now added a range of KS2 books by native authors to my own personal reading list and am incredibly excited to get stuck in! These include:
The Wild Book by Juan Villoro (Mexico)
My Sweet Orange Tree by Jose Mauro de Vasconcelas (Brazil)
The Girl with the White Flag by Tomiko Higa (Japan)
I Lived on Butterfly Hill by Marjorie Agostin (Chile)
Bamba Beach by Pratima Mitchell (India)
Chike and the River by Chinua Achebe (Nigeria)
Toletis by Rafa Ruiz (Spain)
There must be so many more books we are unaware of which KS2 children could access but we hope the map and list forms a decent starting point and an opportunity to explore the world in new and interesting ways. It will remain a document which we will update from time-to-time so hopefully the list will grow and teachers and children will explore even more of the world around us through the magic of books!
